What brings a community together? What really binds the members of the community?
Two things: Pride and Fear.
Perhaps, a third – a shared purpose.

Question: What makes tons of Marathi people stand together with Raj Thakrey? Pride or Fear or Pride & Fear?
In reference to the photograph it will be the dominant matriachal cow who will make sure that everyone is nearby and lead them. But generally it is a common purpose that binds a community. For the elephants the reasons are food, protection, care and education of the young.
@Biggie – It is Pride and Fear. Proud to be a maharashtrian, and Fear of loosing their only source of public outcry.
@Prateek – I agree with the Community of Purpose idea as well, but purpose is a result of something even more primal. Protection being one of them, that’s fear of being stranded and singled out alone :)
Nice picture! But I fail to understand why are Marathis feeling so threatened?? Get over it guys!!
