Goodbye WordPress!

With the recent licensing issues and how Automattic has been reacting to the whole WP Engine situation, leaving a bad taste in my mouth, I have decided to move on from WordPress and try out a new blogging content management system.

I’ve been on WordPress for a very long time. It has been a reliable home for this blog and for most of my professional projects. But the conduct I’ve witnessed recently — the aggressive posturing, the licensing weaponisation, the public behaviour — has made me uncomfortable enough to start looking around.

What’s Next

After evaluating several alternatives I’ve settled on Textpattern as my replacement platform. It is lean, it is well-maintained, and it has a small but genuine community around it.

The main learning curve is Textile — a markdown-esque markup language that Textpattern uses instead of the block editor or classic HTML. I have to figure out a markdown-esque script called Textile, but other than that, this should work.

It feels good to start fresh. Sometimes a forced migration turns out to be the thing you needed.
