Lights Out

This is the first post on this blog. It seems appropriate to begin with something honest about what a blog is and what this one is supposed to be.

Why Start a Blog

The easy answer is that writing clarifies thinking. It is one thing to have an opinion; it is another to articulate it in a form that could withstand scrutiny from someone who disagrees. The gap between the two is where most of the actual thinking happens.

I read a lot. I have opinions about things — technology, films, books, business, ideas encountered in various forms. A blog is a place to do something with those opinions rather than simply accumulating them.

What This Will Be

Honest, I hope. Uncertain when uncertainty is warranted. Not interested in performing expertise I do not have. Willing to be wrong in public and update when confronted with better arguments.

These are easier commitments to make at the start than to keep over time. Writing consistently is harder than most people expect. The ideas run dry; life intervenes; the gap between what you want to say and what you can actually say on any given day becomes discouraging.

I am going to try anyway. You are, apparently, reading this, which means it worked out better than feared. Lights on, not out. Let’s go.
