Shiny Tools Don’t Make a Purpose

I recently bought a Fitbit. Colleagues asked the obvious question: “Has it changed you?” The honest answer was no.

It’s Not About the Fitbit

The Fitbit functions as a measurement tool, similar to an analytics platform. It gamifies activity tracking through badges and peer support. It provides metrics. But it does not provide purpose. The device itself does not motivate behaviour change.

Many marketers and business leaders acquire new tools expecting they will automatically deliver results. I implicitly assumed the Fitbit would magically inspire weight loss and healthier habits. Without explicit purpose, the device is just a data collection instrument strapped to my wrist.

Without Purpose, There’s No Change

Setting a target of 10,000 daily steps requires lifestyle modifications — different commuting choices, scheduled walking time, genuine commitment. The tool alone cannot drive those changes. It can measure progress toward a goal. It cannot provide the goal.

The Lesson

Keep the purpose at the centre. Tools are useful only as long as the purpose they serve remains clear. Shiny new analytics platforms, dashboards, and trackers generate meaningless data without a defined objective they are measuring against. Start with why. The tool comes after.
