    In reference to the photograph it will be the dominant matriachal cow who will make sure that everyone is nearby and lead them. But generally it is a common purpose that binds a community. For the elephants the reasons are food, protection, care and education of the young.

    @Biggie – It is Pride and Fear. Proud to be a maharashtrian, and Fear of loosing their only source of public outcry.

    @Prateek – I agree with the Community of Purpose idea as well, but purpose is a result of something even more primal. Protection being one of them, that’s fear of being stranded and singled out alone :)
